SLJ Bumblebees🐝

Kia ora. I've been doing some SLJ. For this activity, I had to complete 5 sentences about Bumblebees.
Here is my Week 3 Day 2 Activity 1:

  • The word 'bumblebee' is a compound word (bumble + bee). The word bumble meas to __hum, buzz, or drone__
  • Bumblebees can fly very quickly. They can reach ground speeds of ___54____ kilometres per hour (km/h).
  • Bumblebees are very strong! They carry up to __90__ percent of their body weight in food with them to avoid starvation.
  • Bumblebees can do more work and carry more pollen than other bees, including honeybees. In fact, they can do up to   ___50___ times as much work as a normal honeybee.
The number of bumblebees is declining in New Zealand due to a number of factors, including the  _____removal of wildflowers and flowering trees, habitat loss, and extensive use of pesticides_____.

  1. Kia Orana Claire,

I can see that you have tried hard to fill the gaps in the sentences and make sure they were true according to the information. Good news, all the sentences are correct, ka mau te wehi! It helps to be informed, I had no idea bees exerted so much of their energy flying that they come close to death... It's a tough world! Perhaps next time you could include some pictures of bumblebees, do you know if they look any different to honeybees?

I really appreciate the hard work that bees do. A lot of their hard labour actually helps us out in lots of ways. Last year my cat Tori broke her tail and had to have it amputated, she went through a tough healing process. I used Manuka ointment (which has honey in it) to help her wound close properly, it worked like a dream! She has a fluffy stump now, but she is in great health, thank goodness.

    Toe feiloa'i fo'i,

  2. Kia Orana Cia,
Thank you for commenting on my blog!
I'm relieved that I got all the answers correct:)

Bees do a lot of hard work. They pollinate crops and help them to reproduce, it's great that we have bees around! My school has a beehive and inside colony of honey bees live inside. Sometimes we have bumblebees visit!

I'm glad that your cat's alright now. How did Tori break her tail?

At Owairaka, we have Manuka bushes growing in our school gardens, sometimes Garden to Table(a cooking and gardening activity) make Manuka into medicine that soothes peoples throats.
    Thx,
    Claire🌸🍀💗

  3. Malo e lelei Claire,

You are welcome! Thanks for sharing all that knowledge you have, Bees are indeed amazing, it's so awesome to think about all the healing properties honey has. Thank goodness for bees! It's so cool that your school is being proactive with the use of Manuka honey.

To this day, I still don't know how Tori broke her tail, but I think that a car may have run over it. She's still as active as ever running around like a little Bobcat!

It's good to hear from you.

    Toe feiloa'i fo'i,

    Cia.
